Colbert WØRD: “Heated Debate”

Stephen Colbert says: “College students should be unformed lumps of clay fixed in the kiln of unchallenged thoughts.”

As reported by News Hounds ( “We watch FOX so you don’t have to” ) :

… Barry Lucier, a college student at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, was given three minutes of valuable cable news airtime to complain that he was – gasp! – required to watch Al Gore’s documentary An Inconvenient Truth to fulfill the requirements for a class he was taking! I kid you not! Lucier’s story was run on May 9th on uber-Christian Brent Bozell’s rabidly conservative CyberCast News Service. We News Hounds know that this is one of the sites that FOX News hosts regularly use to select “hot” stories that will resonate with the now shrinking Republican base.

Lucier’s main argument was that he and his fellow head-in-the-sand conservatives should have been allowed to watch an anti-global warming documentary entitled Doomsday Called Off produced and directed by Denmark journalist Lars Mortensen as an opposing scientifically correct view of the issue of global warming, featuring six scientists who oppose (to a greater or lesser degree) the concept that man is contributing to global warming. They are Dr. John Christy, Dr Nils-Axel Morner, Dr. Sallie Baliunas and Dr. Willie Soon, Jorgen Peder Steffensen and Dr. David Legates.

There are over 900 other scientists who disagree with these six. Additionally, with the exception of Steffensen, for whom I cannot find a biography but who does seem to have standing in the scientific community, the other five have either misrepresented the work of other scientists or their own resumes or have been associated with right-wing anti-global warming organizations.Perhaps THAT is the reason Barry Lucier’s professor rejected Doomsday Called Off as a rebuttal to An Inconvenient Truth.
