    Current accountability scam artists may be asking me as a classroom teacher to delve into matters that are beyond the scope of my licensure. Specifically, I have been told that students who do not turn in work cannot be evaluated and awarded “zero” or “F” grades because evidence of incompetence cannot be interpreted from no work. If students do not submit work, then teachers are supposed to be able to solve and remedy the student’s psychological/emotional reasons for not doing so. Students who do not turn in work need counseling. Teachers have different licenses and perform a separate duty. Motivation, self-confidence, tolerance of ambiguity, appropriate risk taking behaviors- these are all part of the emotional landscape of an individual, and therapists are the ones who have the license for fixing problems that are part of one’s emotional makeup. If failing the class doesn’t matter to the student, how will the teacher motivate him or her? How can I be held accountable for the emotional issues my students have when their apathy or low self-esteem prevent them from showing me their needs or accomplishments?

    Hi, Tony. I recently article in an online ed. magazine featured a discussion of the similarities between teachers and physicians. I thought about you, so I Googled you and found this blog. I thought you might want to check it out.

    I’ve been teaching at Southeastern Louisiana University for almost ten years, after working as an independent educational consultant since my grad student days at LSU.

    I hope you remember Lynda Dugas, the mathematics education woman who was in classes with me, and who became my best friend. She did not complete her Ph.D., but worked for a few years as a writer for Addison Wesley textbook publisher. She became seriously ill and was an invalid for at least five years before her death in 2006. My husband and I are still good friends with her husband.

    Saving Academic Lives

    I recently read two wonderful books on the medical profession, one by Jerome Groopman (How Doctors Think) and the other by Atul Gawande (Better). I’ve been thinking about how closely the tasks of teachers and doctors are aligned. Teachers have patients, although we generally call them students.
