BBC: El Salvador marks Archbishop Oscar Romero’s murder

Thirty years ago on March 24, Archbishop Oscar Romero was murdered while celebrating Mass, an event being commemorated now in El Salvador.

In Texas a week ago, Romero, a champion of the poor, was removed from the state’s social studies standards by the State Board of Education.

One Board member said Romero’s not important enough, arguing that he doesn’t even have a movie made about him.

Leaving aside the question of using that as their criterion, the fact is that there is the widely-known movie, Romero, in which the Archbisop was played by Raul Julia (See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098219/ ; and he figures in five movies listed at http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0100581/ .
