001.9 (more on creationism & the Dewey Decimal System)

The Sensuous Curmudgeon has pursued the question of creationism and the Dewey Decimal system, commenting that

If the DDC were working as your Curmudgeon thinks it should, all Discoveroid books would be given whatever DDC number is appropriate for books about the Bermuda Triangle and Alien Abductions.

This is one of those things that probably would not have been carried this far by either of us, but in blogland we each take turns carrying it the next step further.

from the back cover of "Chariots of the Gods"

from the back cover of "Chariots of the Gods"

I thought the Curmudgeon was looking in the right direction, but that Intelligent Design Theory is more precisely in tune with Erich von Däniken’s Chariots of the Gods books. (In Chariots, vD argued that if we don’t know how things that remain from ancient times could have been produced by terrestrial beings or processes, this counts as scientific proof that they must have been produced by extraterrestrials.)

Actually, it turns out that those books are in the same classification as the Bermuda Triangle and Alien Abductions: DD number 001.9.

The problems in developing a classification scheme over time can be seen in this overview of 000:

000 Generalities & computer science

  • 001 Knowledge
    • 001.1 Intellectual Life
    • 001.2 Scholarship and Learning
    • 001.3 Humanities
    • 001.4 Research
    • 001.9 Controversial knowledge
  • 002 The book
  • 003 Systems
  • 004 Data processing, Computer science
    • 004.1 General works on specific types of computers
    • 004.2 Systems analysis and design, computer architecture
    • 004.5 Storage
    • 004.6 Interfacing and communications
    • 004.7 Peripherals
  • 005 Computer programming, programs, data
    • 005.1 Programming
    • 005.2 Programming for specific types of computers
    • 005.3 Programs
    • 005.4 Systems programming and programs
    • 005.6 Microprogramming and microprograms
    • 005.7 Data in computer systems
    • 005.8 Data security
  • 006 Special computer methods
    • 006.3 Artificial intelligence
    • 006.4 Computer pattern recognition
    • 006.5 Computer sound synthesis
    • 006.6 Computer graphics
  • If you think about it, you can see how the system could have developed like this. If ID gets put in 001.9, along with Bigfoot and ET, we could expect the Discoveroids to argue simultaneously that 1) they don’t belong there, 2) “controversial” shows that there is controversy, so “both sides” must be taught, and 3) that being classified between “knowledge” and “computer science” shows that theirs is the way to the future.

Anyway, the list below is the intersection of a) the 100 books in 001.9 that are in the holdings of the largest number of OCLC libraries, and b) the 100 most recently published books in 001.9. There are duplicates where a book has more that one edition, or where alternative subtitles seemed worth including. I haven’t done the editing on this list that I would do if I was preparing it for a publication.

    Enjoy!

When I was a teacher-librarian at Kirwan State High School at Townsville, Qld.in the 1980’s our State Premier told us that we had to include in our collection.Ken.Ham’s ( of the Ark Project). Naturally all.materials were catalogued.
I had no hesitation in assigning to Dewey No. 001.9 ( spurious and controversial.knowledge as my protest at having to include it in thr first place.
